Comet from the 60s

Mercury Comet, state of the art in 1963, needed door and trunk keys.

I make the keys by inserting a blank key into the lock. First I file the key with a special file to get a knife edge on one side. Then I put the key in and get “marks,” dents on my super-smooth key surface left by the tumblers inside the lock. I file those down about 10-15 thousandths of an inch, then put the key back in and get more marks. Voila! When you can do that by moonlight, or can do that with a Schlage lock, consider yourself good at impressioning!
